Do you have a night routine? One where you do the same things every single night? Night after night? Probably not eh? That’s okay! I am here to share my experience with you and shed light on this simple night routine that anyone can do.

Let’s start with the why.

Why do you need one?

Let me ask you this, are you someone who wants to be successful in your life? Are you looking for an EASY way to wake up in the morning? Are you tired of waking up everyday thinking to yourself, “do I really have to do this shit again?”. Well, worry no more!! The night routine allows you to wake up feeling prepared, refreshed and ready to seize the day with an intention and purpose. Don’t you want to feel this way every day?

Let’s learn the basics

The two key fundamentals that allow you to have a good night routine:

  1. Preparation
  2. Relaxation

What does this mean? Well, let’s break it down.

Preparation

Preparation is defined as, “the action or process of making ready or being made ready for use or consideration.”. In short, this means you are ready to take on whatever life has in store for you. If you are prepared for the next day even before the day begins, you can face tomorrow head-on with optimism and a sense of purpose.

I do the following things to help me feel more prepared for the next day:

Make a priority list.

Remember, if you have multiple priorities, you don’t actually have a priority list. Make sure you only have 1–3 items that you want to accomplish for the day. That way you won’t overwhelm yourself, and chances are, you’ll be able to accomplish all of them before the day is done. This will give you a sense of accomplishment as well!

Ask yourself, “What can I do today that will benefit me tomorrow?”.

This has been the best thing I have ever done for myself. It allows me to plan little things like putting my gym clothes out, meal prepping my breakfast, and other little things that are easily overlooked in the morning. One thing I do is to make sure the kitchen is completely tidy before heading into bed. If you know me at all, you know that waking up to a dirty kitchen is one of my biggest pet peeves and something that I do not want to deal with during a fresh start to the day.

Journal/reflect.

This is a perfect time to reflect on your day and/or the goals that you are trying to achieve. Reflecting on these allow you to reaffirm, reevaluate and ultimately do better for the next day. I personally use a journal but you can do whatever you want! There is no wrong way to do this.

Relaxation

This is the best part! Try to give yourself at least 30 minutes to relax.

For those who don’t know, relaxing means, “reducing tension or anxiety.”. That means putting your phone away, any tasks you were working on, etc. Basically, don’t do anything that makes you stressed or stimulated thinking during this time.

I don’t exactly know the science behind this, but, keeping your phone around you until the moment you fall asleep actually stimulates a part of your brain that shouldn’t be stimulated past a certain time of day. If you want to learn more, this article should suffice. However, the main takeaway is to not go on your phone when you are trying to relax before bed because it stimulates that part of the brain.

If you are anything like me, when I first realized this I said to myself, “How do I even relax without my phone?”. Oh Cam, what a great question!

Relaxation tips

  1. Read
  2. Clean/Organize something
  3. Laundry
  4. Audiobook/podcast
  5. Tea and meditate
  6. Do anything that doesn’t have a screen associated with it.

Sleep tight everyone!

And that’s it! You have now built the PERFECT night routine and are ready to pass out. Goodnight!
